The tragic escalation in violence in the Gaza strip has shocked many around the world and led for universal calls for a cease-fire. The most recent violence between Israel and Gaza, described as "unprecedented" by U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon, has led to artillery rounds striking at least four U.N.-run schools since December 27, 2008.
The shelling of U.N. schools has led to at least two deaths and the injuries of dozens of others. Estimates are that more than 45,000 Gazans have left their homes and are seeking safe shelter in 49 crowded U.N. schools. This situation is a terrible reminder of the heartbreaking consequences wars have on our school children.
The entire Rubicon team's hearts go out to all of the families affected on both sides of this tragic conflict. We join all in the international educational community in hoping for a quick end to the violence.
The U.N. World Food Program headquarters in Rome is coordinating relief efforts through its Operation Lifeline Gaza program. The U.N. schools are helping Gazans by providing shelter, food, and medical care at the schools to civilians displaced by the conflict. Schools and others interested in contributing to the program should contact:
